Aston Villa players Anwar El Ghazi and Tyrone Mings got into a heated exchange during the first half of Villa’s clash with West Ham on Monday night, with the Dutchman appearing to aim a headbutt at his team-mate.

During a largely uneventful first period at Villa Park, the home side conceded a corner and Mings was unhappy with El Ghazi’s defensive contribution in the build-up.

The pair exchanged angry words and the Netherlands international was not happy with the criticism, shoving his head into the face of Mings.

Such was the severity of the exchange between team-mates that referee Mike Dean referred the incident to VAR, although no further action was taken.

Sky Sports pundits Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville saw the clash slightly differently with Neville believing El Ghazi was lucky to go unpunished while Carragher was largely dismissive.

‘There was a head clash or headbutt, if you want to go that far with it,’ said the former Liverpool man. ‘It was checked and not given. He probably needed to hit him a bit harder to get sent off for it.

‘You don’t like to see it between team-mates, but it’s just a push of the heads really, you don’t want to see someone sent off for it.’

Neville took a dimmer view of the assault, saying: ‘It’s never great, he’s taken a massive risk, El Ghazi, throwing his head towards Mings.

‘I would have thought they would try and make up before they go out [for the second half] but if I was Mings I’d be fuming.

‘They’re entitled to have a row but to throw his head towards him is a step too far.’
