Aston Villa to make Ward-Prowse move after beating Arsenal to Buendia transfer

Aston Villa have agreed terms to take Emi Buendia to the West Midlands and are now looking to take Southampton skipper Ward-Prowse, as Dean Smith is handed substantial funds to further strengthen by club chiefs

Aston Villa aim to pull off a sensational double swoop this coming week for James Ward-Prowse and Emiliano Buendia.

Villa will smash their transfer record to land Norwich’s attacking ace Buendia in a £35million record deal.

Villa moved over the weekend to beat off competition from Arsenal who have held a long-term interest in the Argentine attacking midfielder.

And Villa are also chasing Southampton’s Ward-Prowse, 26, who has seven international caps for England.

Boss Dean Smith wants to complete both transfers as quickly as possible as Villa prepare for another season of progress in the Premier League.

Smith likes Ward-Prowse’s set-piece prowess after eight league goals for Southampton this season including two superb free-kicks in a 4-3 win at Villa Park.

The star also had seven assists in the league campaign and scored his first goal for England in the 5-0 win over San Marino in March.

Villa hope to persuade Southampton to sell but their move for Buendia, 24, is even more advanced.

Formalities are expected to be completed in the next 48 hours after the uncapped ace had a medical in Argentina where he is with the national team.

Buendia was named Championship player of the season for helping the Canaries to the title with 15 goals and 16 assists.

His imminent capture for Villa will eclipse the £28million, plus add-ons, they paid Brentford for Ollie Watkins last summer.

Buendia will boost Villa’s creativity as the side won just three of 12 games when England star Jack Grealish was injured earlier this year.

Smith admitted: “We dropped off massively when Jack came out of the team in terms of our creativity, so we know that is an area we must improve on to help Jack when he is playing or if he has to miss a game or two.”

Buendia has played 121 matches for Norwich since joining from Getafe in a deal worth around £1.5m in 2018.

But the Canaries, who have a sell-on clause, are a self-funding club willing to sell their prized assets to then reinvest in new talent.

Buendia will join Argentine compatriot Emiliano Martinez in Villa’s squad as the club aim to build on their 11th place finish this season under their billionaire owners.

Ward-Prowse is under contract at Saints until 2025 after a new deal a year ago but the star did not make Gareth Southgate’s final 26 for the Euros.
