Aston Villa fans were left furious after England boss Gareth Southgate snubbed Jack Grealish for a call up to the Three Lions squad on Thursday.
The former Villa defender named his squad for the Euro 2020 qualifiers against Montenegro and Kosovo later this month, with Grealish missing out to the likes of Ross Barkley, Fabian Delph, James Maddison and Mason Mount.
The Villans’ ace has been in good form for the midlands outfit this season, netting four times and providing four assists across all competitions, most recently scoring in the 2-1 over Brighton three weeks ago.
But, despite leading Villa to 16th in the Premier League table, Southgate again refused to hand the 24-year-old a call up to the Three Lions’ senior squad.
When asked about the Villa captain, the manager said: “Grealish is a very good player – I’ve watched him closely this season.
“The reality is he’s up against Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford and Callum Hudson-Odoi.
“If we have any issues with the squad I wouldn’t hesitate to call him up. He was very close and just has to keep playing the way he is.”
But the boss’ comments were not received well by the Villa faithful, who could not understand why Grealish had not been called up to represent England.
One fan tweeted: “Ross Barkley – 0 goals 0 assists in the Premier League. Fabian Delph – 0 goals 0 assists in the Premier League. Jack Grealish – 2 goals 3 assists in the Premier League.
“Please open your f***ing eyes.”
Another added: “So Ross Barkley and Fabian Delph have made the England squad over Jack Grealish. Literally blows our mind! BAFFLED.”
While another wrote: “Barkley played 40 mins since last internationals, Hudson Odoi been a bit part player so far this season, Delph is useless yet Southgate continues to ignore Grealish!”
And it wasn’t just the Holte Enders that were infuriated by Southgate’s selection, with supporters of other clubs also questioning the omission.
One Manchester United fan wrote: “Hang on how the f*** did Henderson not get picked in the England squad? Crazy that. Dunk didn’t get in either? As well as Grealish some mad pickings that.”
While a Manchester City fan added: “How Grealish isn’t in is beyond me, not even necessarily instead of Hudson-Odoi because Barkley is someone who shouldn’t be in the squad as well.”
An Arsenal fan tweeted: “Don’t get how Winks gets a call up every time!!! What must Grealish do?”
Others took to social media to mock the outraged Aston Villa fans, with one Wolves supporter tweeting: “No Grealish in the England squad??? Start the mourning in Aston.”
