Ashley Williams heaped praise on Andreas Christensen after his impressive display in Denmark’s Euro 2020 last-16 victory over Wales.

The Danes put in a dazzling display in Amsterdam as they put four goals past Robert Page’s side without reply.

Kasper Dolberg scored in both halves, before the victory was wrapped up by Joakim Maehle and Martin Braithwaite late on, ensuring Denmark’s progression to the quarter-finals.

Chelsea’s Christensen, who is naturally a defender, was pushed into midfield with Wales enjoying the majority of the ball early on.

The 25-year-old adapted to the role seamlessly, man-marking Aaron Ramsey and solidifying his side in the middle of the park.

Although Dolberg scooped up the Man of the Match award for his brace, ex-Wales captain Williams picked out Christensen as his standout performer.

‘Arguably, Christensen was man of the match today,’ Williams told the BBC.

‘For a centre half by nature to move into midfield today and be comfortable in possession, he’s having a great summer.

‘Fair play to him, the manager has asked him to do something a little bit different and he was brilliant.’

‘We are able to be flexible,’ Denmark boss Kasper Hjulmand said after the game.

‘Everything wasn’t perfect during the game but we improved and that’s something we’ve done several times.’
