Ask the expert

TIM Harris, MD of Chips-Away and Ovenclean, says redundancy can be a “reset” towards a better career.

Here are Tim’s top tips on turning a Covid lay-off to your advantage.

Accept it is out of your control. There is no shame to losing your job in a pandemic. Use this time to find a role better suited to you.

Criticise and compliment yourself. Look from the outside in. What are your practical and emotional skills? And what aren’t you so good at? Be brutally honest.

Prioritise mental health. Of course you will worry about the next pay packet. But the best thing you can do for your mental health is look beyond money. Your career is a choice and unless you are happy in what you are doing each day, there will be an impact, big or small, on your wellbeing.

Look at different routes to employment. Could you go self-employed? Or take on a couple of part-time jobs instead of a single full-time one? Redundancy could be liberating for you.
