Arsenal’s hopes of signing Sporting Lisbon striker Tiago Tomas are in the balance after the Gunners failed to qualify for Europe.

Mikel Arteta had hoped to add the promising 18-year-old to his squad this summer, with doubts persisting over Alexandre Lacazette’s long-term future at the Emirates.

Arsenal have held extensive negotiations with the Portuguese club in recent months over a move for Tomas.

Sporting tied Tomas down to a five-year deal last summer and inserted a £52million break clause in his deal for interested parties.

Arsenal are unwilling to pay that much and the figure is considered to be significantly higher than Tomas’ true valuation of around £20m.

Sporting won the league title this term for the first time in 19 years and they are determined not to see the side immediately dismantled.

However, the club are in a dire financial situation because of the pandemic and would listen to offers of around £20m for the teenager.

But Arsenal’s poor domestic campaign has thrown the move into doubt, with the Gunners failing to qualify for Europe for the first time since 1996 after their eighth place finish in the Premier League.

Arteta will be given a modest budget this summer and with the likes of Dani Ceballos, David Luiz and Martin Odegaard all set to depart there is a greater need to strengthen other areas of the pitch.

Nevertheless, Arteta is wary that Tomas’ value is only likely to increase in the coming years and it is a opportune time to capitalise on Sporting’s financial insecurity.
