Arsenal are reportedly eyeing a move for Leipzig captain Marcel Sabitzer, with Mikel Arteta intent on bolstering his options in midfield after an immensely disappointing start to the campaign.

Though the Gunners wrapped up a stunning £45million deal for Thomas Partey on deadline day, Arteta was left disappointed as he made it clear he was also after a more attack-minded midfielder to ease the pressure on club captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

It was widely reported that Arsenal had a series of bids knocked back by Lyon for Houssem Aouar in the summer. The north London giants have now turned their attentions away from the France international and will pursue other targets.

Arsenal’s struggles this season have only highlighted their need for more goals and creativity in the middle of the park – with Mesut Ozil exiled from Arteta’s plans – and Real Madrid’s Isco and Sevilla’s Joan Jordan have both been heavily linked this week.

And according to European football expert Julien Laurens, speaking on ESPN’s ‘The Gab & Juls Show’, Arsenal are also ‘very keen’ on Leipzig’s Sabitzer.

Sabitzer has been on Tottenham’s radar for some time and Arsenal will face strong competition if they decide to test Leipzig’s resolve this January, with several other Premier League teams interested.

It’s understood Leipzig have slapped a £45m price tag on the 26-year-old.

Leipzig sporting director Markus Krasche confirmed this week they were aware of the growing interest in Sabitzer but appeared to rule out a move for the sought-after Austrian this winter.

‘We wanted to end the year first, both sides will deal more intensively with the topic in the spring,’ Krosche told German outlet BILD.

Asked about Tottenham’s interest, Krosche added: ‘As I said, he has made a great development.

‘It goes without saying that other clubs also notice this.’

Speaking to the media after Arsenal’s win at Brighton, Arteta stressed that the club’s recent upturn in form will have no affect on the transfer plans they already have in place.

‘The last few results will not change our approach to the window,’ the Arsenal head coach said.
