Arsenal to make five first-team signings as Arteta's summer focus becomes clear

Arsenal are aiming to complete five transfers this summer with Mikel Arteta targeting defensive recruits as a matter of priority.

The Gunners are looking to bounce back from a miserable 2020/21 season which saw them finish trophyless and outside of the European places for the first time in 25 years.

Emirates chiefs have identified Ben White as a key target at centre-back and talks with Brighton are at an advanced stage ahead of a proposed £50million transfer.

Arsenal are also reportedly closing in on Anderlecht defensive midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga, who could become one of many arrivals in north London to add steel at the back.

As well as a centre-back, The Athletic reports the Gunners hope to sign a right-back, left-back and a goalkeeper ahead of the new campaign.

A No. 10 is also on the shopping list as the sole attacking signing, showing Arteta’s emphasis is on making his side harder to break down.

With uncertainty clouding Bernd Leno’s future, the report claims Arsenal have contacted Sheffield United over a potential swoop for England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

Like Leno, Hector Bellerin’s future with the Gunners also appears uncertain with the Spaniard believed to be keen on a new challenge.

Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan are linked with the Arsenal vice-captain, and the club have already begun sounding out replacements.

RB Leipzig’s Tyler Adams and Sassuolo’s Mert Muldur are at the top of the Gunners’ list, while Arteta is also keen to strengthen his options on the other flank.

Kieran Tierney is considered one of the club’s most-important players but struggled with injuries last season and requires an understudy.

The report claims Arsenal are monitoring Real Madrid prospect Miguel Gutierrez, who made his senior debut at the age of 19 earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Arteta is also keen to add a No.10 to his ranks after Martin Odegaard outlined his intention to fight for his place with Los Blancos.

Leicester City’s James Maddison has been linked with a £50million move to the Emirates, while Wolves maestro Ruben Neves is another long-term target.

Exits are also likely in the centre of the park, with Granit Xhaka likely to join Roma and Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira on the transfer list.

Joe Willock has not been made available to clubs as of yet after his blistering end to last season while on loan at Newcastle United.

But The Athletic claims reasonable offers will be considered and that talks will be held with the player’s representatives during pre-season.

Arsenal players return to their London Colney base on Wednesday 7 July before they travel to Scotland for a training camp five days later.
