Arsenal have revealed that Danny Welbeck underwent a second surgery after suffering a broken ankle during the side’s Europa League clash with Sporting Lisbon.

Welbeck was taken straight to hospital following the horrific injury in the 30th minute of the goalless draw and the 27-year-old forward is expected to miss the remainder of the 2018/19 campaign.

Unai Emery confirmed that Welbeck had sustained a ‘big injury’ following Arsenal’s draw with Wolves on Sunday and revealed that the England international had already had an operation.

Welbeck has since had a second surgery and Arsenal have informed fans that both procedures were successful.

‘Further to sustaining an injury last Thursday against Sporting CP, Danny has undergone a second planned operation on his right ankle,’ a statement on the club’s official website reads.

‘Both procedures went well, without complications. Danny will now recuperate and start his rehabilitation. It’s too early to say how long this will take.

‘Everyone at the club will now be providing Danny with the best possible treatment and support in order to make him fit again as soon as possible.’

Emery set up a FaceTime session between Welbeck and the rest of Arsenal’s squad prior to Sunday’s match against Wolves.

‘I think he was happy to talk to us because he is still a big part of our team and we will all support him when he is injured,’ Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno explained.

‘It was a very good idea because we’re all sorry for Danny and we wanted to win for him.

‘We hope he’ll have a good recovery and we want to see him back on the pitch because he’s an important player for us in the team and in the dressing room.

‘I think the idea of the chat is a big quality of the manager because he does not want a team of individuals.

‘This meeting was very motivating for everyone to play for Danny because everybody likes him and wishes him well.’
