Aston Villa have had a £25million bid for Emile Smith Rowe rejected by Arsenal, with the Gunners unwilling to part with the midfielder.

The 20-year-old enjoyed a fine breakthrough campaign at the Emirates, making 33 appearances in all competitions and scoring four goals.

However, Mikel Arteta is keen on signing a new playmaker this summer with the club keen on signing Real Madrid ace Martin Odegaard after his loan spell at the Emirates.

That could squeeze Smith Rowe’s chances of first team football and the 20-year-old is at a stage of his career where he wants to play regularly to aid his development.

Aston Villa beat Arsenal to Norwich star Emi Buendia but the Athletic report that the Gunners have turned down a £25m bid for Smith Rowe.

The midfielder has two years to run on his deal at the club and though Arsenal want him to extend, he’s yet to commit his future to the Gunners.

Villa therefore sniff an opportunity and can provide Smith Rowe with the greater chance of first team football, with Dean Smith’s side set to pass up the chance to sign Ross Barkley on a permanent basis.
