Arsenal are reportedly plotting a move to land AZ Alkmaar star Teun Koopmeiners.

Mikel Arteta is determined to add quality to his midfield ranks for the forthcoming season and Anderlecht star Albert Sambi Lokonga is set to complete a £17million switch to the Emirates imminently.

But the Gunners are keen to further strengthen in this area once Sambi Lokonga signs, with Arteta short of options after Real Madrid recalled both Martin Odegaard and Dani Ceballos from their respective loan spells in north London.

Matteo Guendouzi also left Arsenal to join Marseille on a temporary basis last week and Lucas Torreira and Granit Xhaka are expected to follow the Frenchman out the exit door before the transfer window closes.

According to Dutch publication De Telegraaf, Arsenal are ‘preying’ on Koopmeiners but face strong competition should they launch a summer bid for the 23-year-old, with Rennes, Roma, Atalanta, Inter Milan and Brighton and Hove Albion among his many admirers.

The Netherlands international is widely regarded as one of the finest young talents in the the Eredivisie after scoring 39 goals in 141 appearances over the last four seasons since breaking into the first-team.

The report claims Arsenal could have a major advantage over their rivals in the race to land Koopmeiners given the player is a lifelong fan of the club.

Koopmeiners has represented the Dutch national team from the Under-17s right through to senior level, making his debut in the side’s 1-0 defeat to Mexico last October.

Back in March, Koopmeiners’ agent, Bart Baving, claimed his client had admirers all over Europe but remained fully focussed on AZ Alkmaar.

‘Koopmeiners is on the shortlists of many clubs in Europe’s top five leagues and Inter are one of them,’ he told FcInterNews.it.

‘I haven’t spoken directly to the Nerazzurri yet but it’s still early in the season and we’ll see what happens in the next few months.

‘For now, Teun is focused on AZ Alkmaar and the Dutch national team.’

Baving is confident Koopmeiners would not look out of place at an elite clubs and likened the midfielder to some of the top midfield players in European football.

‘It’s always difficult to compare players but he’s similar to Toni Kroos, Jorginho, Nemanja Matic or Manuel Locatelli,’ he added.

‘The only difference is Teun will score more goals than any of these players.’
