Paul Merson believes Arsenal are ‘a bit behind’ rivals Tottenham Hotspur and backed Jose Mourinho’s team to finish higher in the Premier League next season.

The two north London clubs will meet on Sunday afternoon, with both still in contention for a Europa League spot next season.

Neither will qualify for the Champions League this season but both will hope to turn their fortunes around in the next campaign.

Arsenal head into the clash in better form having won four of their last five matches, with Spurs only winning twice in the same number of fixtures.

But despite their improvements under Mikel Arteta, Merson admitted he’d be ‘surprised’ if Arsenal finished above Spurs next season.

‘Sunday’s derby is a close one to call. But I think Arsenal are a bit behind Tottenham,’ Merson wrote in the Daily Star.

‘Neither of them are going to finish in the top four this season but there’s more chance of Spurs doing that next season than Arsenal.

‘Over a 38-game season, with the squads they have, and if everyone stays fit, I’d be surprised if Arsenal finish above Tottenham.

‘I saw Arsenal against Leicester and they impressed me. But I liked what I saw from Spurs against Everton as well.’
