Arsenal youngster Matt Smith is heading out on a third loan spell to League One, joining Doncaster Rovers for the entire season to come.

Smith was an important figure for Swindon Town in the first half of last season, making 27 appearances in all competitions and scoring two goals.

He was recalled by the Gunners on 1 February this year and immediately sent back out on loan to Charlton Athletic, where he made less of an impression, only making eight appearances by the end of the campaign and failing to find the back of the net.

Not that goal-scoring is necessarily his job, with Doncaster describing their new signing as, ‘a deep-lying playmaker, controlling the tempo of games and picking out runners in the final third.’

The midfielder will have the full season to try and make an impression in South Yorkshire and will be once again under the guidance of manager Richie Wellens who was in charge when he was at Swindon but is now in control of Rovers.

Smith is yet to make an appearance for Arsenal, but he has regularly trained with the first team and has made it onto the bench six times, memorably being on the bench for the FA Cup final win over Chelsea last year.

Doncaster have had a busy summer so far, also snapping up Ben Close, Kyle Knoyle, Ro-Shaun Williams and Tommy Rowe as they look to improve on their 14th place finish in League One last season.

Smith’s move comes after the trio of Arsenal youngsters, Mark McGuinness, Zech Medley and Trae Coyle all left on permanent deals last month.
