Arsenal legend Paul Merson has urged Manchester United to sign Harry Kane this summer and says the Tottenham and England striker would be ‘perfect’ for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

The Red Devils are expected to sign a new striker this summer and have been linked with moves for Kane and the Borussia Dortmund forward Erling Haaland.

Kane has been one of the most prolific goalscorers in Europe over the past decade, scoring more than 200 goals for Spurs and 34 for England.

Tottenham will be reluctant to sell Kane – particularly to a direct rival – but Merson has urged Manchester United to launch a move by claiming he would be ‘perfect’ for the Red Devils and would help the club challenge for titles.

‘I just think he’s perfect for Manchester United,’ Merson told Sky Sports.

‘If Manchester United want to challenge Manchester City over the next three or four years, they will have to have a Harry Kane.

‘They have to have a centre-forward. In my opinion.’

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes is a big fan of both Kane and Haaland but says he would sign the Norway striker ahead of Tottenham and England’s captain.

‘He’s [Haaland] the best striker out there in the world, without a shadow of a doubt. it’s ridiculous what he’s doing,’ Scholes said on the Webby & O’Neill YouTube channel last month.

‘If you sign him now you’ll get 10 years of him.

‘With Harry Kane, at 28, 29, he’s in the peak of his career but you’re talking two or three years as a top-class striker.

‘When you get to 31, 32, you probably lose your legs a little bit, start to drop deep as he’s started to do a little bit now actually.

‘As for Haaland he’s going to cost a lot more money, they’re both going to cost a lot of money, but I think if you’re looking to the future in the next few years Haaland has to be the one.’
