Emmanuel Petit has urged Chelsea to sign Theo Hernandez, claiming the AC Milan defender would be ‘perfect’ for a Premier League club.

Hernandez has been a mainstay in the Milan team over the past three seasons, making over 100 appearances for the Serie A side since leaving Real Madrid in 2019.

Chelsea have expressed interest in signing Hernandez, who has four caps for France, as they look for cover for the injured Ben Chilwell.

England international Chilwell is expected to miss the rest of the 2021-22 season after injuring his ACL and Thomas Tuchel is keen to bolster his defensive options, with Reece James also out with a hamstring problem.

France World Cup winner Petit has watched Hernandez’s progress closely and believes he would be a ‘perfect’ addition for Chelsea as they look to strengthen Tuchel’s squad during the January transfer window.

‘A transfer to Chelsea would definitely be the right move for Theo Hernandez,’ Petit told

‘He is the captain of AC Milan and he doesn’t speak too much. But he is a young guy and he has got so much energy and personality in the way that he plays.

‘He is a perfect fit for the Premier League. He has got the mentality, he’s a leader, a big character and most importantly of all, he’s a good defender.

‘If I was a manager, I would be more than happy to get this type of guy into my team.’

Hernandez provided an update on his future earlier in the month, revealing he was in advanced talks to sign a new contract at AC Milan despite the interest from Premier League giants and European champions Chelsea.

‘We are at an advanced stage,’ Hernandez said. ‘I’ve been very happy here since the first day and we are in talks.’

Chelsea, currently second in the Premier League, beat Tottenham in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday and face title rivals Manchester City this weekend.
