Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno has praised Chelsea’s decision to sign RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner.

Frank Lampard’s side are on the verge of completing a £53 million deal for the Germany international, who has agreed a contract worth around £170,000 a week to move to Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool had appeared to be on course to sign the striker, who had even held talks with Jurgen Klopp about a switch to Anfield, before Chelsea moved ahead of their Premier League rivals.

Leno, meanwhile, has played alongside Werner with Germany’s national team, while both players came through Stuttgart’s academy.

And the Arsenal goalkeeper begrudgingly admits that Chelsea’s attack will be stronger with Werner in the squad.

‘I get on very well with Timo. He is very welcome in London,’ Leno told Sky Sports Germany.

‘I would be happy for him, Chelsea is a great choice, no question about it.

‘The Premier League is faster, more physical. But I think he’s good for it. Timo is an extremely fast player.

‘With his qualities and killer instinct, I’m afraid I have to say, he could be strengthening Chelsea.’

Meanwhile, RB Leipzig head coach Julian Nagelsmann has confirmed Timo Werner will leave the club.

When asked about Werner’s future before RB Leipzig’s 2-0 win over Hoffenheim on Friday evening, Nagelsmann told DAZN: ‘I do not expect Timo to be here next season.’
