Arsenal and Torino 'strike Lucas Torreira agreement' that could fund Thomas Partey deal

Arsenal have agreed to sell Lucas Torreira to Torino, reports say. The Uruguay international has struggled for minutes at the Emirates Stadium following Mikel Arteta’s appointment as manager. And his departure could be used to fund a potential deal for Atletico Madrid star Thomas Partey.

Arsenal signed Torreira from Sampdoria in the summer transfer window of 2018, shortly after his fine performances for Uruguay at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

He initially impressed in north London, playing a starring role under Unai Emery as the Gunners reached the Europa League final in 2019.

However, Torreira has struggled for opportunities at Arsenal since Arteta’s appointment and didn’t make the cut for the FA Cup final victory over Chelsea in August.

Roma have been linked with a move for the Uruguay international, having already raided the north London giants for Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Yet Calciomercato say Torreira is now poised to join Torino instead, with Arsenal accepting a fee of £24million for the 24-year-old.

Now, there are just minor agreements to thrash out before the midfielder makes the move to Serie A.

But funds from his departure may be used to fund a deal for Atletico Madrid star Partey, who is understood to be a priority transfer target for Arteta.

Atletico have insisted they won’t let the Ghana international leave for anything less than his £45m release clause.

But Arsenal, with an injection of cash, could now make a serious play at bringing the African star to the Emirates before the transfer window shuts on September 5.

Arsenal legend Kevin Campbell, meanwhile, recently expressed a belief his old side should sell Alexandre Lacazette if it means securing Partey’s signature.

“Thomas Partey is the most important signing for Arsenal,” he said.

“A player like Thomas Partey stops things getting to the back four – he is that screen that sits there, like [Patrick] Vieira and Gilberto were – someone who protects the back four so they don’t even need to break a sweat.

“They haven’t had that kind of player since Gilberto, who was such an unsung hero. That type of player, Arsenal have missed.

“I believe that getting Thomas Partey is the priority and I think that they will get the business done in the end but I’m sure they have to get a couple of bodies out of the club before they bring him in.”

He then added: “I don’t like to admit this, but if it is the only way to bring in Thomas Partey, I can see Arsenal parting with Lacazette.

“I don’t want him to leave because I think he gives Arsenal something totally different.

“He’s very good at holding up the ball which gives [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang time to get his runs going inside and score more goals.

“Don’t forget, Aubameyang scored 20 goals with Lacazette in the side.

“I don’t think Aubameyang is that good with his back to goal, he’s a lot better runner running towards the goal so it might lessen the threat of the team.

“So, ideally, I’d like to keep Lacazette and get Partey as well.”
