Apple warns users not to close MacBooks with a camera cover on

Why Macbook users should be wary of camera covers (Reddit/u/koolbe)

Apple’s MacBook laptops are beautifully engineered machines of optimum efficiency.

Unless you decide to put a cover over the webcam, then you’re just ruining everything.

As it turns out, trying to cover up the webcam (just like Mark Zuckerberg does) can lead to display damage when you try and close the laptop. As one user ominously pointed out on Reddit.

According to u/koolbe, even a very thin camera cover was enough to damage the screen of his 16-inch MacBook Pro to such a degree he had to take it to Apple and use the AppleCare+ cover he had bought to get it fixed. He posted the image at the top of this article to serve as a warning.

Seemingly understanding that other people may make the same mistake with equipment that is far from cheap, Apple has put out a warning.

‘If you close your Mac notebook with a camera cover installed, you might damage your display because the clearance between the display and keyboard is designed to very tight tolerances,’ the company stated.

Macbooks don’t have a lot of clearance between the screen and keyboard (Apple)

‘Covering the built-in camera might also interfere with the ambient light sensor and prevent features like automatic brightness and True Tone from working. As an alternative to a camera cover, use the camera indicator light to determine if your camera is active, and decide which apps can use your camera in System Preferences.’

Apple says users will be able to see whenever their webcam is active because a small green light appears next to it. In the later versions of the macOS operating system, users have to give each app permission before it uses the webcam.

If you still own a MacBook and you’re still cautious about someone accessing your webcam, may we humbly suggest a bit of masking tape. It’s low-tech, but it works and it *probably* won’t break anything.
