Apex Legends now at 25 million players and 2 million concurrent

Apex Legends – not a stealth hit

With the number of players more than doubling in less than a week it’s beginning to look like Respawn’s game really could dethrone Fortnite.

There are a lot of obvious similarities between Apex Legends and Fortnite but given how massively popular Fortnite is, it was still hard to imagine that anything could topple it. But Apex Legends’ amazingly fast success is starting to bring in some seriously big numbers.

It was only released on Monday, February 4 but by Friday it had hit 10 million players and 1 million concurrent players (i.e. the number of players playing at the same time).

Now, just a few days later, it’s hit 25 million and ‘well over’ 2 million concurrent players.

The news was announced by Respawn boss Vince Zampella in a new blog post, where he promises some limited-time Valentine’s Day loot for this week and reminds fans that the Twitch Rivals Apex Legends Challenge starts tonight and continues next Tuesday, February 19, with 48 of the biggest streamers.

Apex Legends seems to be following Fortnite’s path of both constant updates and the use of a paid-for Battle Pass, with Season One of the game due to start in March.

There is still a long, long way to go before Apex Legends comes anywhere near Fortnite’s players numbers, which are currently around 200 million with concurrent numbers of up to 10 million.

But the speed with which Apex Legends is gaining has got to have Epic Games worried, especially as Apex Legends had 11 million more viewers on Twitch last week than Fortnite.

It’s also likely to see publisher, and Respawn owner, EA greenlight some rapid expansion, especially in terms of bringing the game to smartphones.

Especially as Fortnite’s big news this week is that the iOS version of the game has made over $500 million since it’s launch last March. Even with Apple’s 30% cut that’s an awful lot of money EA would be leaving on the table without mobile editions.
