ANT McPartlin made a poignant last-minute dash to see his ex father-in-law one last time as he lay on his deathbed, we can reveal.
Distraught Ant, who has been estranged from his own dad Raymond, 64, for 32 years, was told to stay away by family. But he ignored their requests and was driven from his home in west London as his ex Lisa Armstrong, 42, sat at Derek’s bedside in Oxford.
A source said: “Ant was desperate to see Derek. He has no contact with his own dad and Derek had been a father figure to him for many years. Despite everything that has happened with the breakdown of his marriage he was extremely upset to learn he was terminally ill.
“He asked to see Derek one final time but was told he was not welcome at the family home. He refused to take no for an answer and was taken to Oxford anyway.
“Lisa was at her dad’s bedside and was horrified to look out of the window and see Ant arrive out of nowhere. They’ve had no contact for a year. They haven’t even seen each other so it was quite a shock. Ant was turned away.”
Ant and Derek’s relationship soured after he split from Lisa in January 2018 and found new love with former personal assistant Anne-Marie Corbett, 42. In one call about their shared dog, Hurley, Lisa’s dad grabbed the phone and told Ant never to speak his daughter like that again.
A source said: “Lisa was Derek’s priority. He and Lisa’s mum were very concerned about the effect the marriage breakdown was having on her. They watched it all unfold and were there for Lisa at every turn. It’s difficult for any parent to see their child go through.”
Lisa’s mum and dad flew to the US to be with her in July last year after we revealed Ant had moved on. Lisa was said to be heartbroken after his romance was made public and jetted to the US to spend time with a best friend.
Her parents flew out days later and they were pictured together on a beach for what was the last family holiday.
We told yesterday how Lisa’s dad died following a long battle with cancer. Strictly make-up artist Lisa kept his illness a secret whilst battling with the stress of her bitter divorce to Ant.
The pair remain deadlocked over his £62million fortune despite months of negotiation between rival lawyers. Legal costs have already soared to £1.5million.
In the meantime Lisa had been making regular trips to Oxford from the former marital home she shared with Ant in west London.
Grief-stricken Lisa remained with her mum and other family members yesterday and is said to be ‘distraught’ at her dad’s death.
His condition deteriorated in recent months and he was in and out of hospital.
