Boris Johnson was visiting Whipps Cross University Hospital in Leytonstone, London when he was confronted by an angry parent Omar Salem, who according to his Twitter account is a Labour and Remain activist. The anti-Brexit campaigner spoke to the Prime Minister over NHS cuts and long waiting times. He also hit out at Mr Johnson for using the hospital visit as a press opportunity and said the “NHS has been destroyed”.

In a heated two-minute exchange, Mr Salem said the treatment of the NHS “was not acceptable”.

He said his seven-day-old daughter was treated in the maternity ward the night before, but was shocked by how understaffed the ward was.

Mr Salem said: “My daughter nearly died last night.

“There are not enough people on this ward, there are not enough doctors, there’s not enough nurses, it’s not well organised enough.”

He said: “This ward is not safe for children.

“The NHS has been destroyed and now you come here for a press opportunity.”

Mr Johnson said “there’s no press here” but the parent gestured to cameras filming the confrontation and said: “What do you mean there’s no press here, who are these people?”

The Prime Minister explained he was “here to find out” about the situation but Mr Salem said: “It’s a bit late isn’t it? Years and years and years of the NHS being destroyed.”

After is was pointed out he was a Labour activist, he wrote on Twitter: “Quelle surprise. People will be shocked. You couldn’t tell from my Twitter profile.

“My Labour values are WHY I back proper support for the NHS. I am not ashamed of them.”

Following the event, a spokesman for the Prime Minister said Mr Johnson was visiting public services to see for himself the reality of the situation.

He also said the man was understandably “very distressed” and the Prime Minister was “not going to hide away from those circumstances when he goes on these visits, and so obviously is keen to talk to people and empathise and see what he can do to help”.

The spokesman added: “It’s also a reminder of why exactly he is so keen to make the NHS a priority and make sure it’s getting the funding that it requires.”

Mr Johnson is embarking on a series of unofficial election visits across the country, and it’s not the first time the Prime Minister has been publicly confronted.

Mr Johnson was collared by a woman on a walkabout in Doncaster, who said he had a “cheek” to visit the town after the impact of austerity and accused him of spinning a Brexit “fairytale”.

Hours later, his speech in Rotherham was interrupted by an angry heckler, who demanded to know why he was not in parliament “sorting out the mess”.
