Angelique Kerber hailed Coco Gauff as a future Wimbledon champion after beating the US teenager in straight sets to reach the quarter-finals.

Kerber, who won Wimbledon three years ago, produced a professional performance to beat 17-year-old Gauff 6-4 6-4 on Centre Court.

While it was a disappointing end to Gauff’s Wimbledon run, she remains one of the most exciting players on the tour and is expected to bag a number of Grand Slams over the next decade.

‘I have to say Coco is such a great talented player,’ Kerber said after setting up a quarter-final meeting with the Czech Karolina Muchova.

‘She has such a great future in front of her. She will play here so many times and maybe one time she will get the title.

‘I really enjoy my time here. I really enjoy playing in front of you guys again. That gives me the energy to play my best tennis.

‘I will try to play match by match. I’m not looking too much ahead and try to stay in the moment.’

Gauff rose to prominence in 2018 when, at the age of 15, she secured a stunning victory over five-time Wimbledon winner Venus Williams at the All England Club.

Earlier this year, she enjoyed an impressive run to French Open quarter-finals before losing to eventual champion Barbora Krejcikova.

With the Wimbledon women’s draw wide open, Kerber will believe she can bag her fourth Grand Slam this week, but insists her quarter-final opponent Muchova represents another big challenge.

‘I think she’s really a tricky opponent,’ Kerber said. ‘She plays well on grass with her slice.

‘We’ve played few times, but never on grass, so I think it will be an interesting match. I know it will be another tough battle out there.’
