Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sacked from Manchester United

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Ander Herrera has paid tribute to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following his Manchester United departure.

The Red Devils parted company with the Norwegian on Sunday after the struggling team had won just one of their last seven Premier League games.

Herrera, 32, spent five years at Old Trafford before leaving for the French capital on a free transfer in the summer of 2019.

United have struggled to replace the Spain international since his departure, with the likes of Fred, Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic failing to convince.

Now, despite playing under him for just seven months, Herrera has offered a fond farewell tribute to Solskjaer on Instagram.

Who should be Manchester United’s next manager? Let us know in the comments below!

The midfielder wrote: “One of the best people I have met in football. All the best Ole.”

On Twitterhe added: “True gentleman, i feel lucky to have been coached by you.”

Solskjaer was sacked by United less than 24 hours after the team suffered an embarrassing 4-1 defeat against Watford at Vicarage Road.

After previously losing 5-0 to Liverpool and 2-0 to Manchester City at Old Trafford, the Norwegian was under huge pressure at Old Trafford.

He failed to win a trophy during his three-year spell at the club, finishing second in the Premier League and reaching the Europa League final last season.

United have the biggest wage bill in English football and made three big signings in the summer: Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The club’s hierarchy finally decided to relieve Solskjaer of his duties after the Watford debacle and several players have since paid tribute to him.

“You always gave everything and everyone knows you are a legend at Manchester United,” tweeted Marcus Rashford shortly after the news broke.

Captain Harry Maguire, who was sent off against Watford, added: “You signed me for the best club in the world and gave me the biggest honour in football.

“Huge respect and forever grateful. Thank you for everything boss. Legend.”

Herrera’s manager at PSG, Mauricio Pochettino, reportedly wants to succeed Solskjaer at Old Trafford – right now – because he’s unhappy at his current club.

The former Tottenham boss is United board’s No.1 choice, but United aren’t planning on hiring a new permanent manager until the end of the season – because they believe that they can’t get him yet.

The Red Devils want an interim manager to take over, with club legend Michael Carrick appointed caretaker manager for the time being.

United’s record scorer Wayne Rooney, who’s been linked with the job, has slammed the players for their poor work rate against Watford.

“Could the players have done more? 100 per cent,” said the current Derby manager.

“I was so disappointed watching that game at Watford. As a manager you know you can set the team up, prepare, shape them but there is no excuse for some of them performances.

“None at all. I’ve seen players waving their arms around, giving the ball away, blaming other people. It’s not acceptable. I’d be very angry if that was my players doing that.”
