Anchorman star David Koechner – known for playing sports newscaster Champ Kind – has been charged with DUI and hit and run.

The actor, who starred alongside Will Ferrell in the 2004 movie and its 2013 sequel, was charged by Ventura County District Attorney’s office following his arrest on New Year’s Eve.

The 59-year-old saw the New Year in from behind bars after being arrested over the misdemeanours.

Koechner is now due in court in a few weeks’ time, TMZ reports. Each count he’s charged with carries a possible six-month prison sentence.

However, it’s said Koechner is a first-time offender and that they are rarely handed custodial sentences.

It’s said to be more likely that he’ll get probation and be sent on a mandatory alcohol education course.

The actor had been picked up by police after they were tipped off about an erratic driver who had allegedly hit a street sign with his car.

Police located him and he allegedly blew out two tires before being pulled over.

He failed a sobriety test before being arrested and taken to Ventura County Jail.

The Mirror has contacted Koechner’s representatives for comment.

Koechner posed for a police mug shot after his arrest, wearing a blue T-shirt and green zip-up jacket.

His mouth was open when the picture was snapped and he looked a little annoyed to be in the situation he’d found himself in.

He was pictured the day after, filling up his car at a gas station.

He looked to be wearing the same – or a very similar – green jacket over a black T-shirt and wore his spectacles as he filled his car up.

His white vehicle appeared to have a rather large dent in the right-hand back passenger door, but it’s not known if this was anything to do with the alleged incident from the night before.
