Amir Khan and Kell Brook face off for the first time

Amir Khan has explained how Terence Crawford’s advice on the importance of remaining active has left him feeling in top condition.

The 34-year-old will finally meet long-term rival Kell Brook in the ring in a long-awaited showdown that will take place on February 19.

He came face-to-face with his counterpart yesterday in a heated press conference to confirm the domestic dust-up.

Khan spoke about the importance of his upcoming training with pound-for-pound star Crawford and how shadowing him will help him widen his skillset.

“I think I will start training with a team like Crawford and them guys,” Khan told reporters at the press conference. “He is an amazing fighter and I know that when you train with the best fighters like Andre Ward and Manny Pacquiao it brings the best out of you.

“By watching them you visualise how good they are and pick things up from them. I will do the same with Crawford as well.

“Everything down to timing and speed, he is so well prepared as a fighter and I think it will be good to learn things from him, and I think it will bring that love back to the sport for me.

“I will spar with him as well because he likes to spar once a week regardless when he isn’t in camp. He is one of the fighters who told me to stay busy and in the gym.

“I used to take time off and not train, when I first met him he was someone who told me ‘don’t take time off after the fight’ as you pick up ring-rust and things like that.”

Khan previously fought Crawford back in 2019 where he was pulled out by his corner after a “low blow” left him in uncomfortable pain in the sixth round.

His upcoming opponent Brook has also recently fought the welterweight star and was on the receiving end of a brutal fourth round stoppage late last year.

‘King Khan’ must now focus on making a successful return to the ring against a fighter who will be keen to earn the bragging rights from their bitter feud.

The pair will face off at a catchweight of 149lbs with Khan claiming that he was forced to drop two pounds as part of the contractual agreement.

A six-figure financial penalty will be imposed if the fighters are unable to make the weight limit for their duel next year.

The sanctions in the contract were required to even up the playing field according to Khan, who is confident he made the right call by accepting the offer.

“The fight is at 149, Kell Brook is not making 147,” Khan continued. “Even though he fought before me but he still can’t make the weight.

“There has to be extreme financial penalties (making weight) because at the end of the day I am already giving two pounds away, and I am only at 162 walking around anyway so I will make the weight easily anyway.

“I am happy to do that and I did say if he goes over the 149lb limit there is going to have to be penalties and that is not because I am being unfair. If I am going to give away weight it is only fair he will have to do the same.”
