Amid heavy rain, flood sweeps away four-year-old in Lagos

A four-year-old girl, simply identified as Azeezat, has been swept away by flood amid the heavy rainfall in Lagos State on Thursday.

This was disclosed by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency and confirmed by the National Emergency Management Agency.

According to available information, the incident occurred at 35, Fashola Street, off Igbayi Ola Street, Orile Agege in the early hours of Thursday.

LASEMA said it received a distress call concerning a flood incident at about 10:30am on Thursday.

It said upon the arrival of the LRT at the incident scene in the company of NEMA officials, it was gathered from residents that Azeezat fell into a flooded big ditch/gutter while escaping to safety with her family in the wee hours of the day after their compound was submerged by flood.

The Agency’s officials in collaboration with the officials of NEMA carried out post-disaster assessment and observed that three streets were affected by the heavy rainfall/flood.

These were Igbayiola Street, Fashola Street and Egbatedo Street.

It said there are barriers blocking the drainage channels in the affected areas, leading to the canals at Aboru, Arugbanla and Iyana Ipaja, which could have also caused the flood from flowing away.

LASEMA said at the time of issuing its statement, Azeezat was yet to be found.

However, it said search for and recovery of the body of the victim was still ongoing.
