All this £22 keyboard does is copy and paste

The three-key keyboard is only meant to be used for copy and pasting (Drop)

An amusing April Fool’s Day joke has turned into a legitimate product in the form of a keyboard that does one thing, and one thing only.

Stack Overflow, the programmer website with 15 million users teamed up with US retailer Drop to create The Key.

It’s a keyboard with only three keys. And all it does is copy and paste.

‘We wanted to riff on a popular meme about the ubiquity of copy pasting code from our site,’ the team behind the site wrote in a blog post.

‘Lots of people enjoyed the prank, but a lot of people also left comments on our blog or on social media asking if they could actually buy The Key for real. So, over the past few months, we’ve been quietly working to bring this little dream to life.’

Amazingly, the keyboard is now available for pre-order in the US for $29 (£22). The next batch is set to ship in December as Stack Overflow says it has already sold out of inventory. They will ship to the UK if you have an overwhelming desire to own one yourself.

As you can see, there are three keys with the C and V standing for copy and paste respectively. All three buttons can actually be mapped to whatever you want them to be and the little contraption connects to your computer via a USB-C cable.

The Key started out as an April Fool’s Joke (Stack Overflow)

Stack Overflow says it will be donating all profits of the sales of The Key to a non-profit called digitalundivided. The charity leverages data, programs, and advocacy to catalyse economic growth for Black and Latinx women entrepreneurs in innovation and technology.

‘It didn’t feel quite right to profit off a glorious meme born from our community,’ the team behind the site wrote. ‘Good artists copy, great artists steal, but greatest artists copy, then paste.’
