No really – last year shoppers broke out in fights while they queued at 6:30am on the day the toys land in stores.

And in November Kevin the Carrot cuddly toys were being flogged on eBay for £1,000 despite costing £3.99 to buy from the supermarket.

Well, the discounter is now hoping to use Kevin and his wife Katie’s popularity to raise some money for charity by auctioning them off on eBay.

There will be 400 limited edition plush toys up for grabs, featuring Kevin and Katie in doctors and nurses’ uniforms.

Each toy will be listed for £1.11 – significant because it’s the phone number those who have symptoms are supposed to call for help – and all proceeds will be donated, and split evenly, among the two charities.

NHS Charities Together is a collective of organisations that aim to support the wellbeing of healthcare workers.

Meanwhile, the supermarket has supported the Teenage Cancer Trust for the past three years, which provides specialist nurses and health teams, and who have had to adapt the way they offer care due to the pandemic.

The auctions will start tomorrow at 8pm and won’t close for four weeks in a bid to raise as much money as possible.

Julie Ashfield, managing director of buying at Aldi UK, said: “With our Kevin and Katie plush toys proving extremely popular at Christmas and having helped to raise money for charity in the past, we felt what better way to raise money and celebrate NHS workers, than to create “superhero” doctor and nurse carrots for fans to bid on?”

Others who have been inspired during the pandemic to raise cash for charity include 99-year-old army veteran Captain Tom Moore.

So far, he’s raised £27million for the NHS by walking 100 laps of his garden before his 100th birthday.

The Sun has also launched an appeal to raise £1million for NHS staff fighting coronavirus.
