THOUSANDS of Aldi workers will see their wages boosted from February 1 as the discounter has revealed a number of pay rises for staff.
The supermarket is upping wages shop workers, although what you’ll get depends on where your store is based and how many years you’ve been working for the company – and not everyone will get an increase.

Aldi says “thousands” of staff will benefit from the pay hike.
Here’s what you’ll get:
- Shop workers outside of London’s M25 who’ve been with the company for less than three years will see their hourly pay rise by 30p (3 per cent) from £9.10 to £9.40.
- Shop workers in stores outside the M25 who’ve been with the company for three or more years will see wages remain at £10.41 an hour.
- Shop workers in a London branch who’ve been with the company for less than two years will see their take home pay increase by 35p an hour (3 per cent) from £10.55 an hour to £10.90 an hour.
- Shop workers who’ve been in a London store for more than two years will see their hourly rate rise by 26p (2 per cent) from £10.89 to £11.15.
- Management and head office staff are on different pay rates but Aldi says they too will get a pay rise as part of this process.
Staff are paid for breaks taken during their shift.
Aldi’s hourly pay is higher than the government’s national living and minimum wages, which vary from £3.90 an hour for apprentices to £8.21 an hour for workers aged 25 and over.
The supermarket also pays slightly more than the Living Wage Foundation’s “Real Living Wage” of £9.30 an hour outside of London and £10.75 an hour within the capital.
Of course, not all of Aldi’s boost will go directly into workers’ pockets as they’ll likely still need to pay income tax and national insurance on it.
How to ask for a pay rise
HERE are some top tips on how to talk to your boss about getting a pay rise:
- Ask at a strategic time – for instance an annual performance review
- Be upfront and honest with your manager and explain your situation in a private meeting
- Be clear on your reasons for asking – have you taken on any new responsibilities?
- Be confident, you need to show that you believe you deserve any rise
- Highlight some key success points you have had over the past 12 months that have helped the company to achieve its objectives.
- If you think you’re underpaid, research what people within your job role are paid in your local area and bring these in to demonstrate to your manager
- Be specific about what salary you would like and how you came to that number
- Be ready to negotiate, and make sure you consider other perks such as flexible working
- Keep your emotionals in check. Make sure you stay professional at all times
- Be prepared to look elsewhere if a pay rise isn’t offered.
While pension contributions and student loan repayments may also be taken directly from wages. And if you’re on benefits, this increase could impact how much you receive.
Aldi, which currently has 874 stores and says it’s the UK’s fifth largest supermarket, is also recruiting for more than 3,800 store-level positions this year and says it’s on track to open 1,200 UK stores by 2025.

Aldi also increased wages for staff from February 1 2019, where they rose by up to £10.89 an hour.
