Aldi to give thousands more workers a second pay rise

THOUSANDS of workers in its distribution centres will get a pay rise from September.

Around 4,200 logistics workers will benefit from the pay rise which’ll take most hourly wages well above the National Living Wage.

Logistics workers for the budget supermarket will see their wages rises by up to 9% – depending on role and location.

The move comes only weeks after the firm announced that it will raise the minimum hourly rate for 26,000 workers to £10.50 – and £11.95 for those within the M25.

The new rates exceed the Living Wage Foundation’s recommended real living wage of £9.90 an hour nationally.

The hike will affect around 4,200 employees of the supermarket chain.

The pay rise will take force in September and will affect all staff on hourly rates.

Aldi said the majority of the staff in distribution centres are Warehouse Selectors, who’ll receive a new minimum rate of £12.66 an hour.

Those who work outside normal operating hours will also see their night premium payments increase from 20% to 25% of their normal hourly rate.

Giles Hurley, chief executive officer of Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “This announcement recognises the amazing contribution our logistics colleagues make in serving communities across the country.

“We’re also pleased to be able to increase the night premium we pay to our many colleagues who work so hard to keep our stores well-stocked.”

In total the latest pay rises mean Aldi has splashed out £50 million to increase the pay of its shop staff and logistical workers.

The supermarket also pays workers paid breaks, worth £830 to each store worker annually.

Morrisons is to give 80,000 store and manufacturing staff a pay 2% rise from October.

Marks and Spencer decided to hike workers’ pay to £10 an hour in February.

Workers get free health checks as an added bonus too.

Asda also hiked rates from £9.36 an hour to £9.66 in April.

While Tesco raised its wages from £9.30 to £9.55 back in September last year.

Workers at Iceland get paid £9 an hour.

Aldi is the UK’s fifth-largest supermarket and has more than 970 stores across Britain.
