ALDI has announced it will be giving 28,000 workers a pay rise from February next year.
The discount supermarket will pay all store assistants at least £10.10, which rises to £11.55 if members of staff live within the M25.
Currently, Aldi’s minimum wage rate is £9.55 outside London and £11.07 within the M25.
This makes Aldi one of the best paid supermarkets in the UK alongside Lidl, which boosted workers’ pay packets with salaries of up to £12.25 an hour depending on their level earlier this year.
Aldi also said that the boost means that these workers will be paid higher than the real living wage rate, which is £9.90 an hour unless you live an hour inside the M25, in which case it is £11.05.
It means that Aldi will splashing out on £34million giving store assistants more money from next year.
The supermarket also pays workers paid breaks, worth £750 to each store worker annually.
Aldi UK and Ireland chief executive Giles Hurley said: “The commitment and enthusiasm of our colleagues has driven our success over many years, particularly during the last 18 months.
“We want to ensure our colleagues are always fully rewarded for their amazing work.”
Aldi isn’t the only supermarket who announced it will increase its staff wages this year.
Along with Lidl, who gave 21,000 workers a pay hike, Morrisons became the first supermarket to guarantee pay of at least £10 an hour in January.
It affected 96,000 Morrisons colleagues – approximately 9% of its workforce.
Sainsbury’s also gave workers a pay boost in March to say thanks for their hard work over the Covid crisis.
It comes as supermarkets have been battling it out to get more staff in to help with the increased demand for groceries and more over the pandemic this year.
Thousands of workers were wanted in Tesco and Sainsbury’s stores earlier this year to help keep shelves stocked.
While this Christmas, grocers are on the hunt for temporary members of staff to help as the busy festive season hits stores.
