Alan Shearer has heaped praise on N’Golo Kante for his vital performance as a half-time substitute in Chelsea’s 3-0 victory away at Tottenham on Sunday.

In the first half at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the hosts were comfortably the better side, but at the break, Blues boss Thomas Tuchel reacted and replaced Mason Mount with Kante.

The French World Cup winner made up a midfield three alongside Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho, with his high-energy display and protection of the defence allowing wing-backs Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta to fly forward and help the attack.

The Blues completely dominated the second period, with their goals coming from Thiago Silva, Kante himself and Antonio Rudiger.

Speaking on Match of the Day, Shearer hailed Kante for his game-changing 45-minute appearance, as well as Tuchel for making the substitution and tactical change.

‘He brought an energy to that Chelsea team that was missing in the first half and well done to Tuchel for spotting that at half-time and changing it,’ said Shearer.

‘They were just ok, they weren’t quite at it in the first half but the second half, it was men against boys, it should’ve been six or seven.

‘What he [Kante] did was, he enabled [Cesar] Azpilicueta and [Marcos] Alonso [to get] much further up the park.

‘Tottenham really couldn’t cope with the energy he [Kante] brought into the team, he gave a little bit of protection. It wasn’t all about him sitting in front of that back four, he offered them something going forward because he got the goal as well.

‘Those two [Azpilicueta and Alonso] I thought were superb, there were so many impressive performances from the Chelsea team but [Kante’s performance] was the main difference, he’s there just in case they lose the ball, they could press a lot higher because of what he gave them.

‘That guy [Tuchel] changed it at half-time and it worked perfectly.’

Tuchel was also effusive in his praise of Kante after the match, branding him a ‘unique’ talent.

‘If you have N’Golo, you have something that everybody is looking for,’ said Tuchel after the match.

‘You have everything that you need in midfield. You have work-rate, intensity, ball-wins, skilful play, off the ball, with the ball, dribbling, drive and, today, even a goal.

‘I see this every day in training and it’s hard to believe how good he is. Don’t make the mistake of reducing him to ball-wins. He plays excellent in every possession game we have in training.

‘He’s a unique guy. We were strong in midfield with him, Jorgi [Jorginho], and Kova [Mateo Kovacic] in the second half.

‘N’Golo is N’Golo, he’s fantastic.’
