Premier League transfer rumours: Newcastle set sights on Chris Wood

Alan Shearer expects Tottenham will edge out bitter rivals Arsenal to snatch the final spot in the Premier League top four and secure all-important Champions League qualification.

The Gunners sit fourth in the table with just over half the season played but Spurs are only two points behind with a pair of games in hand.

There is a considerable gap separating the top three of Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool from the rest of the chasing pack, and Shearer believes the trio are already too far ahead not to finish in the top four.

The former Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle striker also suspects there is already too great a rift between City and their nearest rivals, meaning the trophy is destined to adorn Sky Blue ribbons in May.

“Before a ball was kicked I did say Chelsea [to win the league] – I’m having severe doubts now,” Shearer told Optus Sport.

“The run that Man City have been on, they’ve just been relentless and Pep (Guardiola) is just incredible, the way he keeps drilling out results and getting the best out of all of those players that he’s got.

“It’s difficult with so many good players because every good player wants to play every week and how he handles that is hugely important.

“So I’ll probably have to say Man City. I don’t think anyone will beat them now.”

Turning his attention to the race for the Champions League, Shearer tipped Son Heung-min to propel a Spurs team hitting form under Antonio Conte to fourth at Arsenal’s expense, with the likes of Manchester United and West Ham also passed over.

The Premier League’s record goalscorer added: “Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea… I’ve been really impressed with (Mikel) Arteta and Arsenal and how he’s handled things.

“But (Antonio) Conte going into Spurs and with Harry Kane and Son up front, I think I might say Spurs into fourth position.”

At the other end of the table, the England icon outlined his hope that Newcastle can avoid the drop as he predicted Norwich, Watford and Burnley will be relegated.

“Probably Norwich, Watford and I always say Burnley will have enough but I’ve watched Burnley a few times in December and been really surprised at how poorly they’ve been defensively,” Shearer said.

“I know they don’t concede as many as the other teams in the relegation battle do but then going forward they haven’t scored as much either.

“They’ve got (Maxwel) Cornet, who can produce spectacular goals… So, I’m going to say Burnley, let’s hope that Newcastle that are going to get out of it.”
