Alan Shearer has accused Granit Xhaka of ‘not fancying it’ and leaving his struggling teammates in the lurch against Manchester City on Saturday.

Arsenal’s early season crisis deepened at the Etihad as a much-changed side sank to a catastrophic 5-0 defeat which heaped further pressure on their already under-fire manager Mikel Arteta.

The Spaniard has now presided over the Gunners’ worst ever start to a Premier League season with his side rooted to the bottom having lost all three games, conceding nine times and failing to score.

Arsenal’s cause was hardly helped yesterday when Xhaka was dismissed for a dangerous tackle on Joao Cancelo with his team already 2-0 down and chasing City shadows.

It was the 11th time Xhaka had been given his marching orders during his career and came less than a week after he had committed his future to the club by signing a long-term contract having appeared to be on the verge of joining Roma earlier this summer.

Though he won the ball, Shearer felt Xhaka could have little argument given the reckless nature of the challenge and felt Arteta should have been raging at his most experienced midfielder’s lateset rush of blood to the head.

‘That’s 11 red cards in his career now. You just can’t excuse this,’ Shearer told Match of the Day. ‘All he’s said to his teammates is ‘sorry lads, I don’t fancy this today’.

‘Who he’s trying to impress I don’t know. You cannot tackle (like that). We all know the laws, you can’t go in like that. He’s putting his opponent in danger. He’s out of control. It’s the correct decision. It’s a red card.

‘He’s said to his teammates ‘you’re on your own. Thanks very much, I don’t fancy it today’.

‘He (Arteta) should be raging at that tackle. You’re up against it anyway. You cannot afford to do that type of thing.’
