The idea of moving to Italy, living rent-free in a beautifully restored townhouse while making money as an Airbnb host, might sound like a pandemic fever-dream.

But it’s not – Airbnb is allowing one person to do just that.

The vacation rental app is on the lookout for one person to move to the Sicilian village of Sambuca for a whole year and live in a specially designed ‘1 Euro House’.

All you have to do is host a private room of the house on Airbnb.

The ‘1 Euro House’ is one of the houses owned by Sambuca’s municipality that could have been sold for 1 Euro.

With the growing flexibility to work and live from anywhere, the chosen person can continue working remotely as long as it’s okay with their employer and their home country’s laws.

Airbnb will also pay for the flight tickets from the participant’s nearest airport to Sambuca, airport transfer upon arrival in Italy, Italian lessons for one month and four cooking lessons with a local mentor.

It really doesn’t get much better than that, does it?

Once selected, the winner will be responsible for the costs associated with using and maintaining the ‘1 Euro House’ and any taxes applicable to hosting activities.

The selected participant may bring a friend, partner or family as the house can accommodate a maximum of 6 people with space for up to 2 Airbnb guests.

The participant, in their role as a Host, will have to follow Airbnb’s Covid-19 Safety Practices, which include wearing a mask, practising social distancing, and abiding by their five-step enhanced cleaning process.

Sambuca is a small rural village of about 6,000 inhabitants in Sicily, approximately 80km south of Palermo, characterised by a unique blend of Italian and North African cultures and architectural styles.

The participant will therefore need to demonstrate a commitment to hosting and to contributing to village life.

The spacious building spans three floors, with the ground floor comprising a small living room, master bedroom with a king-size bed and en-suite bathroom.

The first floor includes a living room, kitchen, working space, bathroom and mezzanine bedroom with a king-size bed. The upper floor includes an additional living space with a queen-size sofa bed.

The successful applicant will get first dibs on the bedroom of their choice and list the second bedroom on Airbnb.

The selected participant must arrive in Sambuca on or before June 30, staying and hosting for a minimum of 3 months. The subsequent period depends on the agreements with the municipality and may be extended up to the year 2024.

The successful person will be required to follow Covid-19 rules applicable and should obviously check local restrictions at home before travelling to Italy.

If the Italian village life is calling, you can apply by filling out this form on Airbnb’s website.

Good luck!
