South Africa star Aiden Markram took an outstanding diving catch to dismiss Australia batter Steve Smith during his side’s T20 World Cup opener.

In a low-scoring clash, Smith had made a composed 35 and looked set to guide Australia to victory.

However, Markram had other ideas, giving South Africa a chance of completing a remarkable victory with a stunning catch in the deep.

Attempting to strike Anrich Nortje into the off-side for four, Smith pulled the ball slightly too straight and Markram produced an excellent diving grab.

On commentary, former New Zealand bowler Danny Morrison was left in disbelief, exclaiming: “Are you joking!

“Thought it was a four, but Markram has got a cape on here. That is a catch and a half.”

His partner on commentary added: “What a catch, this is an incredible catch!

“Steve Smith looking to repeat the shot that he played off the earlier delivery but this time he’s hit it up in the air and look at Markram – what a catch. Unbelievable!”

Reacting to the catch on social media, one fan wrote: Gets better every time you watch it this catch. Incredible.”

“Stunning Catch, Aiden Markram you beauty!” wrote another.

“Now, this is an absolutely flying catch by Aiden Markram,” added a third. “Brilliant piece of fielding !!”

Earlier in the game, Markram had been South Africa’s sole shining light with the bat, scoring 40 as they made a below-par score of 118-9.

Despite their poor showing with the bat, South Africa were excellent in the field, coming close to completing a shock win.

Nortje dismissed Australia captain Aaron Finch early for a duck and South Africa continued to pick up regular wickets to keep themselves in the game.

However, Marcus Stoinis and Matthew Wade were able to get their side over the line, with Australia winning the match by five wickets.
