Perched on a golden throne, Jason Donovan made the other long-awaited Neighbours comeback of the weekend – to the screams of fans.

While his former co-star Kylie Minogue lit up the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury, Jason Donovan returned to the land of the pharaohs.

The Australian actor and singer was back at the London Palladium in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, the show that launched his stage career 28 years ago.

Donovan delighted the audience at Saturday night’s preview, fans cheering every time he swivelled his hips and shook his golden skirt. The official gala opening is on July 11

This time he is not in the title role – at 51 he has acknowledged he is too old – but instead plays Pharaoh.

And while Donovan had told the Daily Mail ‘I won’t be putting on a loincloth this time’, director Laurence Connor and designer Morgan Large clearly had other ideas.

The actor playing Pharaoh has normally donned an Elvis-style white suit with padded shoulders and flared trousers.

But the costume for Donovan’s Egyptian monarch has been stripped back to expose his abs, echoing his appearance when he played Joseph on the same stage from the summer of 1991 to early 1992.

The ten-week revival of the Rice/Lloyd Webber musical sees 21-year-old Jac Yarrow from Creigiau, South Wales, make his professional stage debut, while Sheridan Smith stars as the narrator.
