ADVERTORIAL: Back Brewers to score but Villa to march on

Aston Villa have a rich League Cup record.

The Villans were the first to lift the trophy in 1961, have won four subsequent League Cups and been losing finalists on four other occasions – including last March when they came agonisingly close to ensuring that Manchester City finished the season empty handed.

They go again tonight – in their first match of the season – televised on Sky Sports Football and Main Event, kicking off at 7.45pm.

The bookies aren’t anticipating an upset.

Villa are 4/9 favourites with thepools.com while Burton are 6/1 to pull off a shock win.

While Villa are coming into the tie cold, Burton already have three competitive matches under their belts – a penalty shoot-out victory over Accrington which earned this tie, a 3-3 draw at Peterborough in the EFL Trophy and then a League One curtain raiser at Fleetwood on Saturday.

The Brewers lost that one 2-1, and John-Joe O’Toole was sent off in the last minute which means he is suspended for tonight.

But Villa have done well in pre-season with a 5-2 win over Wycombe Wanderers and a 1-0 victory over Manchester United last Saturday when new signing Ollie Watkins scored the only goal.

Watkins was last season’s Championship joint-top scorer and joins Matty Cash as additions to the Villa squad which narrowly escaped relegation last season.

Villa should win, but given this is their first match of the season – and that 12 of Burton’s last 13 games in all competitions have seen both teams score, Both Teams To Score and Either Side to Win at 17/10 is the stand-out bet.

Ollie Watkins is 11/4 first scorer and 17/20 anytime which are both worthy of consideration.
